Well nerks to that I say! With full sun, a spritz of water at sunset, and you have yourself some pretty juicy berries… no mater what year they were planted and no matter how many runners you have on the plant.
You may also be wondering why do I have pine needles just laying around the strawberries? Well, not only are needles left behind from a pine tree good for mulch. They also make for a pretty mean fertilizer!

Thanks to a comment left behind Mark hedger. They mentioned that pine needles are acidic. As far as I know, most berries are acidic so this would help most kinds of berry producing plants.
Ever wonder where STRAWberries got their name? From what I was told when I was younger is that strawberry plants not only thrived in straw but were also covered during the winter by straw to protect them. Pine needles are a type of straw AND fertilizer so be careful of how much you put around your plants!
Keep these tips in mind when planting your strawberry plants.
- Water at sunset
- pine needles
- don’t worry about berries or runners
How To Make Your Raspberries Grow Above And Beyond

Pine needles are not a type of straw.
Straw is an agricultural by-product, the dry stalks of cereal plants, after the grain and chaff have been removed. Pine trees are not a cereal plant, thus, their needles are not straw. The industry might call it straw, but it isn’t.
